McGraw hill buys Busuu: Publishers make the move into new technologies

The ways of learning are changing with new technologies. In recent years we have seen how online learning has been gaining ground over books. The big publishers have had to make a leap in their strategy and enter the online market in order to be able to compete in the market. Publishers such as Anaya have already made a turn in their strategy and have incorporated new technologies, while other publishers such as McGraw Hill have decided to enter the technological world by acquiring companies in the sector.



McGraw buys Busuu

In June 2015 McGraw bought a minority stake in Busuuthe popular mobile language learning social network for €6M.

Busuu had previously received a €4.5M round of funding when it moved from Spain to London.

As a result of this purchase, McGraw Publishing retains the exclusive right to distribute Busuu to schools, private institutions and companies.

The acquisition has responded to the growth needs of the two companies.

For its part, Busuu, which operates in a market where there are more and more competitors that are growing disproportionately, such as  DuolingoThe company is starting to distribute its product in new channels such as schools and private companies.

In addition, the cash injection allows you to improve your product and offer improved services to your customers.

 The product currently has a market presence in Brazil, Russia, China, Turkey, Germany and the United States. The company offers free and paid audio-visual language courses in 12 languages, as well as direct interaction with native speakers around the world.

For McGraw, the large American publisher, the acquisition of Bussu allows it to improve its services in the digital market and to be able to offer its customers to join Busuu's teaching methods, which allows you to talk to other native speakers to improve your knowledge of a language, as well as to send your "homework" to be corrected by other users, thus forming a large network of users, which with the new agreement could be increased.
