Telecoms step up investment through venture capital funds

34% more annual money invested in 2012

According to cbinsights data, investment by telco venture capital vehicles grew by 34% on a year-on-year basis in 2012. The number of deals grew by slightly less at 27%, meaning that the average deal size per deal was slightly higher. Corporate venture capital activity in the other sectors was lower (7% increase in volume and 23% in number of deals) reflecting the intensity of activity in the telecoms sector.

USA, Germany and France lead the ranking of the most active countries

Although telecoms' CVC investment is geographically dispersed, almost half of the deals since 2008 have been in US startups. Germany captured more than 12% with 25 stakes, almost all of them from Deutche Telekom's T-Venture. France captured 7% of the deals.
