Today we take a look at the main figures for Venture Capital worldwide in 2017: investment volume, mega-rounds, most active Venture Capital firms...
2017 has been a very strong year for investment, driven by the mega-rounds record (financing rounds in excess of $100M) of the millennium.
The overall investment volume increased by almost 50% compared to 2016, with $164,000M invested in 11,042 deals. This number of rounds is also higher than last year's 11%, also beating the previous record reached in 2015 (of 10,102 deals).
Analysing the figures at regional level, North America leads the global investment in 2017, with $74,500M invested in 5,365 deals. It is followed by Asia with $70,800M in 2,847 financing rounds and, far behind both, Europe with $17,600M in 2,483 deals.
Looking at the evolution of global investment over the last eight quarters, we can see that investment volume grows, while the number of transactions stagnates. Similarly, overall investment grows by 5% and the number of rounds drops by less than 1% in the last quarter of 2017, with $46,700M invested in 2,827 deals.
Corporates, and/or their investment divisions, accounted for 28% of the rounds in Venture Capital investees in Q4 2017. Looking at the year as a whole, the share of Corporate Venture Capital has reached 25% of total deals..
