Software as a service known as SaaS is a software distribution model in which a third party provider hosts applications and makes them available to customers over the Internet. SaaS involves third party providers hosting, maintaining and supporting software requirements with lower upfront costs and eliminates the need for organizations to install and run applications in their own environment or data centers.
This study covers 15,358 companies from all over the world, labelled in the "SaaS" category.
All data on the companies, acquisitions and founding rounds were extracted on June 17, 2020. Operations, rounds and companies founded after this date have not been included.
It can be seen that from 2010 to 2017 there was a lot of activity regarding the creation of companies, reaching a number of 1500 companies founded in 2015, with the exception of 2016, when there was a drop to be taken into account. In 2018 and 2019 there is a downward trend, reaching a figure very similar to that of 2010, some 600. This may mean that the sector is becoming a mature one, leaving behind the growth stage.
On the other hand, the level of investment has been constantly increasing since its inception until 2019, having an upward trend, and a very high level of investment, reaching figures close to 30 billion dollars. In spite of this, in 2020 investments have been considerably reduced, however this is due to the fact that as this is the current year there are still investments to be considered and made.
Investment activity has been very high (a maximum number of operations close to 300), with a very positive progression since 2010. The last two acquisitions in 2020 were made by Advent International, one of the world's largest private equity firms, and EBSCO, the leading provider of research databases, electronic journals, journal subscriptions, e-books and discovery services for academic and public libraries. Both operations took place in February.
On the other hand, with regard to stock market activity, there have been several IPOs, with Ucloud Information Technology being the most important one this year, at just over 4,427 million euros. This company provides cloud storage and data analysis services to online gaming and e-commerce operators, a sector that is very present today.
Some of the factors on which the industry can be segmented are type and application. In this report we will focus on the application. Based on the application, the industry can be segmented into banking and finance, telecommunications and IT, consumer goods and retail, and logistics and transportation.
