La inteligencia artificial y Machine Learning (aprendizaje de las máquinas) son la parte de la informática que se correlacionan entre sí. Estas dos tecnologías son las tecnologías más modernas que se utilizan para crear sistemas inteligentes. Aunque se trata de dos tecnologías relacionadas y a veces la gente las utiliza como sinónimo la una de la otra, pero aun así ambas son términos diferentes en varios casos.

La diferencia entre inteligencia artificial y machine learning es que la inteligencia artificial es la capacidad de las computadoras de mostrar un comportamiento “inteligente”. Whereas Machine Learning es una de técnica que se utiliza para crear y mejorar dicho comportamiento. Esto mediante entrenamientos automáticos basados en la exposición a datos. 

Como método de creación de inteligencia artificial, el machine learning se especializa en técnicas estadísticas para la programación de algoritmos capaces de aprender a realizar tareas. Así, el machine learning se encarga del “aprendizaje”, el cual es la base para lograr los distintos campos de aplicación de la inteligencia artificial, como lo son el Computer Vision para que las computadoras sean capaces de reconocer las imágenes, o el Natural Language Processing para que puedan comprender el lenguaje humano. Este último campo de aplicación es el fundamento de los conocidos chatbots y los asistentes virtuales de trabajo.
