Helios buys Quirón What other operations have there been in the hospital sector?

The German group Fresenius Heliosfollowing the acquisition of Quirón, Spain's leading private hospital operator, will control around 10% of the private hospital network in Spain. Some 43 hospitals, with annual sales of around €2.3 billion.

About Chiron

Quirón, which merged in 2014 with IDC HealthThe company has 39 care centres and some 300 occupational risk prevention centres, as well as a workforce of 35,000 people.

After the merger, the group has been incorporating new hospitals such as Ruber and Clínica Rotger in Palma de Mallorca, which belonged to the CVC fund.

Fresenius Helios is the largest private hospital operator in Germany. Headquartered in Berlin, it operates 112 clinics. Last year, its sales amounted to € 5.578 billion and operating profit to € 640 million. It is part of one of Germany's 30 largest groups of companies, the Fresenius Group. It is listed on the stock exchange, with a current market value of more than 37 billion euros and sales of more than 25 billion euros and some 200,000 employees. In addition to its hospital business in Germany, it is a world leader in the treatment of kidney diseases through Fresenius Medical Care; a provider of medicines, medical devices and services for the critically ill through Fresenius Kabi; and a healthcare infrastructure manager through Fresenius Vamed.

Acquisitions of HM Hospitales to grow in Madrid, león

HM Hospitals is the leading private hospital group in the Madrid and Galicia regions and the second largest group in terms of healthcare activity in Spain. In 2016 it made 4 acquisitions in order to maintain its position, after seeing how its competitors were growing in the sector.

In January, it acquired 100 % of the property of Gabinete Médico Velázquez (GMV), after reaching an agreement with Unilabs, its owner since 2011. GMV is a reference centre for gynaecological activity in the Community of Madrid since its incorporation 30 years ago.

In February it acquired a 50% from the San Francisco clinic in León and in June it decided to acquire the other remaining 50%. In addition HM Hospitales does not rule out making further acquisitions in the province of León and in the autonomous community.

In May, HM Hospitales buys Centro Médico La Paloma and its two satellite centres in Torrejón to reinforce its hospital project in Alcalá.
