AgTech: empresas líderes en el sector

En este post volveremos a hablar del sector AgTech o Tecnología agrícola, que como ya sabemos, se basa en la introducción de la biotecnología, el blockchain y la inteligencia artificial en la agricultura con el objetivo de aumentar la productividad, eficiencia y rentabilidad del sector.

Sin embargo, el concepto AgTech es muy amplio y abarca una gran variedad de tecnologías aplicadas a la agricultura: el uso de drones para el cultivo de la cosecha y para el control de los campos; fotografía y sensores por satélite; inteligencia artificial para el análisis de softwares que ayuden a predecir plagas y enfermedades que afectan a la cosecha etc.

Aunque este es un sector relativamente emergente y en crecimiento, existen algunas empresas que en poco tiempo han conseguido un gran volumen de facturación y el liderazgo en el mercado, como por ejemplo Osram y Monsanto.

OSRAM

OSRAM Licht AG es una compañía multinacional alemana dedicada a la manufactura de herramientas de iluminación, como, por ejemplo, luces LED, láser y sensores, sistemas de gestión de luz y todo tipo de bombillas. Tiene su sede en Munich, Alemania y cotiza en la bolsa de Frankfurt.

En el último ejercicio (2018) obtuvo una facturación de 4.115 billones de dólares estadounidenses y cuenta con aproximadamente 27.400 empleados en todo el mundo. En relación con el AgTech, fabrica componentes y sistemas de iluminación de bajo consumo tanto para invernaderos como para el cultivo domestico de frutas y verduras que.

OSRAM fue adquirido por AMS en diciembre del 2019 por un total de 5,07 billones de dólares.

Monsanto

Monsanto Company es otra de las empresas líderes en el sector del AgTech, con un valor de mercado de 56,3 billones de dólares, una facturación de 20 billones de dólares y 25.500 empleados repartidos globalmente.

Monsanto es una multinacional estadounidense cotizada en bolsa productora de agroquímicos y biotecnología destinados a la agricultura. La sede de la corporación se encuentra en Creve Coeur, San Luis, en el estado de Missouri. Es también líder mundial en ingeniería genética de semillas y en la producción de herbicidas, el más famoso de ellos es el glifosato, comercializado bajo la marca Roundup.

En septiembre de 2016 fue adquirido por la compañía farmacéutia Bayer por 66 billones de dólares.
